Millions of barrels of oil are exported from the West African region everyday, worth billions of dollars in profit. The documentary Big Men takes an objective look at both sides’ perspectives in the ongoing battle between Niger Delta ethnic groups and large oil companies for control over the region’s resources intensifies. The documentary first explores oil companies’ strategies for amassing influence and goodwill in the Ghanian government. Award-winning filmmaker Rachel Boynton then travels to Ghana to show the efforts of local groups trying to stop big oil producers from what they view as exploitation, sometimes resorting to violence. Big Men goes beyond “rebel uprising” headlines to paint the conflict not as a story of right and wrong, but as a story of haves versus have-nots. Big Men will debut on PBS’ documentary series “POV” on Monday, August 25th. Find out more on the film’s website.
