Documenting Impact series

Documenting Impact is a series of online discussions about the impact of powerful documentary films and media projects and their ability to transform society. These discussions offer funders and media makers a chance to go behind the scenes on the making of these important projects and the strategies that helped broaden their impact.

Through a partnership with OVEE, an online screening platform from Independent Television Service (ITVS) that allows viewers to watch and chat live together in a virtual theater, we combine excerpts from social impact documentaries with interviews with filmmakers, funders, and impact producers.

Recent Documenting Impact broadcasts include:

The Look of Silence: More than 50 years after the 1965 Indonesian genocide, a family of survivors discovers how their son was murdered, and learns the identities of his killers. The Look of Silence focuses on the family’s youngest son, an optometrist named Adi, who decides to do something unimaginable in a society where the murderers remain in power: He confronts the men who killed his brother and, while testing their eyesight, asks them to accept responsibility for their actions. This discussion featured filmmaker Joshua Oppenheimer and Director of Social Impact Media Rebecca Lichtenfeld from the Bertha Foundation, a principal funder of the film.

Girl Rising: Girl Rising is an incredible, uplifting film that chronicles the lives of nine girls in various countries across the developing world who must overcome enormous challenges to do what most of us take for granted: go to school. This OVEE features a thought-provoking conversation between Vince Stehle, our executive director, Holly Gordon, the film’s executive producer, and Hilary Sparrow from Vulcan Productions, a funder/producer of the film.

Who Is Dayani Cristal?:  Who Is Dayani Cristal? is a 2013 Sundance award-winning documentary that retraces the steps of Yohan, a Honduran migrant who died on a journey to cross the border into the United States. Our OVEE features discussions between Vince Stehle, our executive director, and director Marc Silver, impact producer Lina Srivastava, and Robin Reineke, one of the subjects of the film.

Chasing Ice: Chasing Ice is a powerful documentary that uses time-lapse video to tell the story of our planet’s changing climate.
