We invite you to join Media Impact Funders, Philanthropy New York, Donor’s Education Collaborative, and the NYC Youth Funders for a special one-on-one interview with Kavitha Mediratta, Chief Strategy Advisor for Equality Initiatives and Human Capital Development at The Atlantic Philanthropies, about her new book Inequality in School Discipline.

The book addresses the profound and life-altering consequences students face—especially young people of color—when schools enforce punitive disciplinary systems.

Kavitha will be interviewed by the Ford Foundation’s Senior Program Officer in Youth Opportunity and Learning, Frederick J. Frelow. During their conversation, both will reflect on how and when philanthropy can best serve as an agent for change and the kinds of partnerships that make that possible.

We’ll explore:

  • School discipline—suspensions, expulsions, and arrests, among others
  • Why some students are subjected to harsher discipline than others and how to change these patterns in schools
  • Philanthropy as a change agent—when it works and when it does not
