Please join us for brunch and conversation with the Surdna Foundation’s Shawn Escoffery, Minnesota State Rep. Ilhan Omar and director Norah Shapiro about the extraordinary film that chronicles the 2016 Minneapolis race for state representative in a district that is home to the nation’s largest Somali population.
Time for Ilhan follows rising political star Ilhan Omar, a proud, hijab-wearing Somali-American mother, community activist and one-time refugee as she seeks to unseat the longtime incumbent who served in the legislature for 43 years. Omar’s story presents a counter-narrative to the pervasive negative portrayal of politics, Muslim immigrants and women in America. It also raises questions about barriers to access to the political process in America, and offers a refreshing and inspiring example of overcoming them.
The race resulted in Omar becoming the first Somali Muslim legislator elected to political office in the United States—an especially dramatic win given the anti-Muslim rhetoric that brewed during the 2016 presidential election.
We will gather for brunch, followed by clips and conversation with Omar, Shapiro and Escoffery. This special gathering offers funders an opportunity to meet with Omar and Shapiro for an intimate conversation.
