Media Influences on Social Outcomes: The Impact of MTV’s 16 and Pregnant on Teen Childbearing

This National Bureau of Economic Research working paper by Melissa S. Kearney and Phillip B. Levine  examines how MTV’s 16 and Pregnant franchise influences teenagers’ attitudes toward birth control. The authors found that the show was correlated with an increase in searches and tweets regarding contraception and abortion — leading to a decline in teen birth rates in the U.S. in the 18 months following its original airing.
