Philanthropy’s growing role in American journalism: A new study reveals increased funding and ethical considerations
A new study conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago in partnership with Media Impact Funders and The Lenfest Institute for Journalism that examines the role of philanthropy in American journalism found strong growth in support for nonprofit news over the past five years, an increase in funding to for-profit newsrooms, and a growing focus on communities of color.

Before joining Media Impact Funders as operations manager, and later executive producer, Sabira was lead account director and producer at ArsenalFX Color, a post-production facility in Santa Monica, Calif. Sabira has a B.A. in Communications from Santa Clara University, and a 10-year career in Los Angeles spanning a wide variety of roles in media. She has worked in film, commercials, and long-form television, from production, to visual effects, to post-production, collaborating with top studios such as HBO, Fox, NBC Universal, to name a few. Sabira moved from content production to philanthropy to return to her early goals of supporting media that makes a difference.
