Rapid shifts in politics, technology and media consumption are disrupting Americans’ First Amendment rights in unprecedented ways, and threatening freedom of speech across the globe.
On the afternoon of June 21 and for the full day of June 22, MIF will join The Pittsburgh Foundation and The Heinz Endowments at “The First Amendment for the 21st Century: Current Threats and Community Responses.” The gathering will bring in funders, journalists, artists and advocates together to better understand this volatile period. Speakers and participants will explore concrete responses that bolster democracy and affirm people’s rights to be well-informed and speak their minds.

The event’s locations will reflect the importance of free expression in the arts. Day One will take place at the August Wilson Center for African American Culture, and Day Two at Pittsburgh’s Creative and Performing Arts High School, which prepares students to succeed as cultural producers and leaders.
