Are you heading to Park City, Utah, for the Sundance Film Festival?
For years, MIF has been gathering film funders before the official start of the film festival as a way to connect, share and learn from one another. This year, we’ll gather at the Miners Club in Park City to spotlight a few important ideas and projects, and then we’ll switch gears to discuss your work, your priorities, and anything else happening in the field that we should know about.
Whether it’s your first festival experience, or you’re a seasoned pro, this film funder gathering is designed for you to learn about new projects and network with your colleagues. And we’re really passionate about giving you ample time to make the connections you need to help strengthen your work, and the field. We can’t wait to see you!

Program Agenda | 9:30-10:30 a.m.
1. Film Spotlight: “2000 Meters to Andriivka”
“2000 Meters to Andriivka” is the second feature film on the war in Ukraine from the Oscar-winning team behind “20 Days in Mariupol”—Ukrainian filmmaker and Pulitzer Prize-winning AP journalist Mstyslav Chernov, producer and editor Michelle Mizner and producer Raney Aronson-Rath.
We’ll hear from Mstyslav Chernov and Raney Aronson-Rath ahead of the film’s world premiere in Sundance’s World Cinema Documentary Competition.
2. Alternative Distribution Models with Industry Leader and Former Sundance CEO Keri Putnam
Independent film plays a crucial role in society, offering profound insights and unique entertainment. While filmmakers now have access to wider audiences, the field faces challenges. Streaming services are cutting back on independent film, and public media funding is under threat in a dramatically changing political environment.
This conversation between Media Impact Funders’ Executive Director Vince Stehle and former Sundance CEO Keri Putnam will explore Keri’s new research report, the US Independent Film Audience & Landscape Study, published by Harvard’s Shorenstein Center, where she is a fellow. Putnam will discuss how funders can support platforms and systems to expand the reach of independent film.
3. Film Spotlight: “Sugarcane”
“Sugarcane,” the debut feature documentary from Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie, follows a ground-breaking investigation into abuse and death at an Indian residential school that ignites a reckoning on the nearby Sugarcane Reserve.
We’ll hear from directors Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie, and National Geographic’s Carolyn Bernstein, in a conversation moderated by Kayce Ataiyero, Board Chair of Media Impact Funders and Chief External Affairs Officer at the Joyce Foundation.
