Mainstream Media Ecosystem Analysis
This new research from Protagonist is an analysis of the role mainstream media outlets play in today’s media ecosystem, the powerful way their coverage can shape popular narratives and how embedded practices amplify partisan Strategic Narratives in media (these Strategic Narratives are identified in Protagonists first research project presented at the Media Impact Forum in 2025, which you can rewatch here).
Drawing on data from 6.1 million news articles from 2020-2025, the results show how even “neutral” coverage influences public understanding through patterns of framing, emphasis and repetition. The findings point to a consistent focus on conflict over solutions, an imbalance in whose voices are elevated, and a tendency to flatten complex issues into binary debates.
The report finds that mainstream media outlets rely on six practices ‘that cumulatively have the effect of privileging institutions and norms, prioritizing the optics of neutrality, and shaping the boundaries of what is considered politically and socially acceptable’:
- Associational Institutional Perspectives with Credibility
- Impost Binary Political Framing on Contentious Issues
- Elevate and Normalize Selected Concepts from the Margins
- Deplatform Voices that Challenge Systems and Institutions
- Default to the Stated Intentions Behind Political Actions
- Explore the Stories Behind Flashpoint Events
These practices represent mainstream media’s reliance on stories that have clear conflict and/or visual drama, which can perpetuate harmful narratives; provides opportunities for fringe perspectives to test mainstream legitimacy and deprioritize perspectives rooted in experiences of incarceration, poverty and racism.
The resulting effect is that mainstream media plays a key role in media narratives by:
- Defining who and what is treated as legitimate
- Allowing editorial choices to become obscured by presenting their coverage as a reflection of reality rather than as both a construction and reflection
- Provide a reinforcement of the status quo through reliance on crediting institutional actors and discrediting detractors
- Centering narratives that minimize optimistic visions of the future
