The Value of Journalism
This report commissioned by DW Akademie, UNESCOand the International Fund for Public Interest Media makes the case that journalism is an “enabling condition” that can lead to multiple, ongoing, direct and indirect benefits that are often hard to quantifyThe report also argues that these impacts can be“cascading and compounding”, meaning that one investigation can produce positive results, inspire similar work elsewhere and contribute to broader returns over time.
The report provides evidence for journalism’s impact across six areas:
- The role journalism plays to increase trustworthy news and information integrity
- Supporting democracy, accountability and good governance
- Exposing and deterring corruption
- Reducing the risk of conflict, violence and repression
- Improving emergency response
- Accountability, preparedness and resilience
The majority of the report focuses on journalism’s value across three main areas: as an economic enabler, supporting national security, and improved disaster and response. On the economy, the report links stronger press freedom with higher GDP and cites evidence that countries with high GDP rates are linked to regions with better press freedom ratings and shows that for every $1 spent on journalism, more than $100 is saved through reclaimed public funds, improved services and reduced corruption. On national security and stability, the report points to a strong relationship between media freedom and resilience to disinformation campaigns. On disaster response, the research highlights journalism’s role in providing trustworthy information, drawing attention to crises and helping attract outside support and investment in disaster aid.
The report uses this evidence to make the case for journalism as a cost effective and accessible investment strategy for funders working toward a range of social and economic outcomes.However, it is noted that investment in journalism, without the presence of functioning democratic institutions is not likely to yield these impactful results.
