As the field of journalism continues to grapple with the collapse of news industry across the country, it’s clear that financial support is needed now more than ever. Philanthropy, in response to the radically changing landscape, is stepping up to revive quality journalism and reconfigure the news media ecosystem. And, in fact, funding for nonprofit news media has seen a notable uptick in philanthropic support, oftentimes in the form of new types of grants.
To better understand these dynamics, Northeastern University’s School of Journalism and Harvard University’s Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy produced a report highlighting philanthropic support of nonprofit journalism. In addition, we partnered with the Shorenstein Center to produce a case study report aimed at surfacing innovative funding models. We’ll hear from:

  • Nicco Mele, director of the Shorenstein Center, will provide an overview of the recently released report Funding the News: Foundations and Nonprofit Media. (Supported by the Barr Foundation and the Heising-Simons Foundation.)
  • Kathy Im, director of Journalism and Media at the MacArthur Foundation, and Nathalie Applewhite, managing director at the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, will share insights on MacArthur’s pioneering unrestricted, five-year grant to the Pulitzer Center, which is featured as one of the case studies in our latest report, Funding Journalism, Finding Innovation: Success Stories and Ideas for Creative, Sustainable Partnerships. We will also be hearing from Pulitzer’s new executive editor, Indira Lakshmanan, who, in her career as a journalist, has reported on global issues in more than 80 countries. Lakshmanan, who is currently the Newmark chair in journalism ethics at the Poynter Institute and a Boston Globe columnist, spoke at our Media Impact Forum in May about restoring trust in journalism across the political spectrum. Watch her remarks here.
  • We’ll also hear about some of the other case studies highlighted in the Shorenstein report.
